Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in implementing replay technology.
Replay technology will make its debut at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.
Competitors are granted the option to challenge particular calls from the official, mirroring the system already in operation at both the US Open and the Aussie major.
This innovation will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This step follows just a season following the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year role of line judges.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine other situations, including:
- Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- If a ball touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
- Possible hindrance end of a point.
Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a competitor can ask for.
Case in Point
An illustrative example took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.
Draper admitted it was a tough call for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at all of its tournaments.
Additional Innovations
Another change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses situations where the crowd have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was out or in.
In other news, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
